Students follow classes in their mother tongue, although all students are grouped together for instrumental music and vocal classes and during extracurricular and social activities.

From kindergarten to Grade 11, the Fine Arts Program allows students to adapt to 4 artistic disciplines : visual arts, theatre/drama, vocal and instrumental music. Those more gifted or motivated are able to showcase their talents in complementary activities such as the jazz band, the symphony orchestra, the FACE young singers, plays, etc.

FACE offers drama for both Primary and Secondary students. Focusing on creativity, collaborative play and imagination, students are provided with a wide range of stimulus to facilitate their engagement in this arts subject. Using the Progression of Learning, FACE has a dedicated and qualified team of teachers who tailor the drama classes to the abilities of the students.

There are three competencies that must assessed and they are the following:

For Primary School:

Competency 1 – To invent short scenes 

Competency 2 – To interpret short scenes

Competency 3 – To appreciate dramatic works, personal productions and those of classmates 

For Secondary School:

Competency 1 – Creates dramatic works

Competency 2 – Performs dramatic works 

Competency 3 – Appreciates dramatic works 

Areas in a drama class can cover theatre history with the conventions and devices of the period, the many fascinating genres, acting process, such as voice, movement, characterization, interpretation of text, and naturally in understanding the rehearsal and performance process. These are some of the central elements in the building blocks of the drama class.

Central to all drama classes is for students to work as a team, in how to perform with others and to give positive feedback to other members of the class. This process enhances a student’s own personal development that can range from building confidence, public speaking, problem solving, conflict resolution and collaborative engagement. Drama classes helps in building individual confidence and promotes a great sense of camaraderie between students.

As the students’ progress through the years, by Yr 10 and 11, they have the opportunity to work on a drama production, which encompasses all the elements in the making of a play. Students get to participate in their area of interest: actors, stage technicians in the area of set and props, costume, lighting and sound design. Not only are students able to work in their specialized group, the process is wholly student driven, under the watchful eye of a committed team of professionals.

In the final years of the school, the theatre production provides a whole class experience and is invaluable for the students because they learn the mechanisms that make a play. Based on such hard work, the production is a real highlight in the drama journey and the students are extremely proud of their achievements.

FACE offers all public school programs from kindergarten through high school, in accordance with Quebec’s Education Act and the Ministère de l’éducation, des loisirs et du sport’s Basic School Regulation.

SOME DETAILS ABOUT THE CORE CURRICULUM

Elementary science

• Grades 3 to 5: Introduction to robotics
• Grades 4 to 6: Participation in the annual school science fair
• Introduction to laboratory techniques

High school science

• Participation in the annual school science fair, with the winners going to regional fairs

High school mathematics

• Participation in the Fermat and Pascal Canadian Mathematics Competition (each year, our students perform well in these competitions)
• In secondary 4 and 5, FACE offers advanced math and science programs, including the required physics and chemistry courses for CEGEP science programs

Physical education (per week)

• Elementary level: one period (50 min)
• High school level: two periods (100 min)

French

• Regular French classes are enhanced with drama classes at both the elementary and high school levels

For the past 46 years, FACE School’s music program has provided generations of students, from Kindergarten to Grade 11, with solid musical foundations and practical training on wind and string instruments and voice. Although FACE’s music program does not aim to train professional musicians it develops its students’ talents for life and provides a well-rounded musical education that prepares them for becoming a more creative and versatile adult in an increasingly complex society.

From kindergarten to grade 3, the students’ schedules integrate Orff  instruments, recorder and choral singing. Additionally, the children can be introduced to stringed instruments by using the Suzuki method of instruction, as an extracurricular activity. These courses are subject to additional fees.

In the fourth year, students are offered to learn an orchestral instrument (winds, strings and percussion). With only very few exceptions students stay on the same instrument until grade 11 and the instruments are supplied by the school.
